An art that was once in great demand is now a rarity. Cooperage is an ancient art that consists of making wooden containers for storing wine and, more recently, brandy/cachaça. It developed close to riverside areas, closely linked to wine. In Vila Flor, a Portuguese village located in the Douro Superior, Francisco Taveira, a 27-year-old young man, dedicates himself to cooperage and repairs old barrels, contributing to the production of good wine. He is one of the few coopers who performs this work of repairing old barrels. Dinis that the Escalhão castle was built, which, like all other border castles, aimed to reinforce the defense of Portugal's “dry border” against possible Castilian attacks. Just like nowadays, agriculture was for centuries the means of subsistence for a large part of the population of Freixo, but there were other activities that, due to their social and economic importance, deserve to be highlighted: the manufacture. A reference in the proto-industrial panorama, the art of working silk spread throughout the Trás-os-Montes region and gained an international reputation. In 1793 there were 16 factories here with 73 looms in operation, employing 71 weavers in the production of carpets, fabrics, ties, ribbons and sifting cloths. Freixo was also a village that benefited from its proximity to Spain, being therefore commercially strong, exporting many of its productions and manufactures to the neighboring kingdom. Opened in August 2015, the Silk Museum aims to honor and publicize the history of this culture of great importance in Freixo de Espada à Cinta. This is currently the only municipality in Trás-os-Montes where silk is still worked. Silk culture reached its peak at the end of the 18th century until it fell into oblivion. The old house where silk was worked, is now a museum. Visitors can learn about the entire silk cycle, crafted by hand, as well as purchasing the products that are manufactured there. The shepherd's routine begins very early, with milking in the morning, and then grazing the animals. When the shepherd took the milk home, they strained it with a sieve and a cloth into an aluminum pan. Rennet (thistle flower) is added to the milk intended for cheese, acting as yeast. Sheep's milk is known worldwide for being an excellent source of nutrients and for having a high solids content, which gives its derivatives a distinctive texture and flavor. The Natural Park Douro International is one of the most important areas in the national and Iberian context, recording a total of 170 registered species. Avifauna is the group of greater representativeness in this area by the high diversity and the occurrence of several endangered species that guard here an important portion of their nesting populations, about 170 species recorded. Penedo Durão is a huge rock that rises on the right bank of the Douro River. At its top there is a viewpoint which, in addition to the excellent views it offers, is a privileged place for bird watching. The best observation strategy in this location is to prospect the cliffs and surrounding areas. Large gliding birds are a common presence here, including the griffin and, in spring, the Egyptian vulture. Is also very common to see the peregrine falcon this place. Among the rupicolous birds, the blue-blackbird, the black-redstart and the rock swallow stand out. Additionally, the surrounding scrubland is frequented by wrens and various warblers. It should be noted that the viewpoint faces east, so the lighting conditions over the valley are better in the afternoon (although the cliff is only lit in the morning).
